Monthly Meetings

We usually meet on the last Wednesday of every month. These meetings are designed to build interpersonal connections and community, inform members about the work done by our committees in the previous month, and provide opportunities for learning and collaboration. All interested students, faculty, clinicians, and Yale affiliates are welcome to attend our monthly meetings.

Can a Pineapple a Day Keep the Doctor Away? An Overview of Current Research on the Immunoregulatory Effects of Bromelain in Allergic Asthma

This discussion will review Dr. Secor's current research on the anti-inflammatory effects of bromelain, a pineapple stem extract, in allergic asthma. Practical issues of working with botanicals in basic science and clinical research such as identity, assurance of certificate of
analysis, dose response, overall quality and the use of appropriate controls will be discussed.

Dr. Secor is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Immunology at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He received his bachelors and pre-medical training at Central Connecticut State University, and his N.D. and M.S. from Bastyr University. His current studies in the laboratory of Dr. Roger Thrall at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington include the anti-inflammatory effects of botanical extracts such as
Bromelain from Ananas cosmosus (common pineapple), the use of complementary medicine
in clinical setting, completion of the Masters of Public Health degree, and postdoctoral course-work in immunology.
